MindSoft Secret Agent HD Review

MindSoft Secret Agent HD is a re-release of a 1992 MS-DOS puzzle platformer that riffed on spy tropes and classic Bond films. It follows 006 1/2 as he infiltrates and destroys three island strongholds of the Diabolical Villain Society.
In terms of gameplay it's not a complex affair, with basic platforming and a little bit of shooting to get you through each level. However, the game's most interesting feature is that of a level editor. This allows you to create your own levels to play as well as to share with others.
The graphics in Secret Agent HD are a tad more colorful and detailed than the original, but they still rely on the 8-bit style of the old DOS days. This is something that's not always easy to replicate, but Emberheart has done a nice job of bringing it up to date.
It's also got some chirpy MIDI compositions that fill out the soundtrack and are a fitting inclusion to the game.
Secret Agent HD's other nifty-looking touch is the fact that it has some genuinely cool visual effects, such as some of the levels featuring a floating radar dish. Despite its obvious limitations, it's certainly one of the more interesting looking games to hit the PC in years.
The gameplay in Secret Agent HD isn't the best, but it is a fun and memorable experience that will make you wish you were an agent of justice so you could have taken down the evil Diabolical Villain Society. If you like retro platformers, Secret Agent HD should be on your must-play list.
